The pressure tank and switch decide when the pump runs. When the tank loses its air cushion, the pump starts and stops every few seconds. When the switch contacts burn, the pump won't start at all. Both are among the cheapest well repairs, and fixing them early saves the pump.
Call (321) 220-9883Signs of a tank or switch problem
- The pump clicks on and off rapidly (short cycling).
- Pressure surges, then drops, in the shower or at the hose.
- The gauge needle jumps quickly between low and high.
- Water spits from the tank's air valve when pressed. The bladder has failed.
- The pump won't start until someone taps the switch.
The fix
A tank that has only lost air can be recharged. A tank with a failed bladder or a rusted shell is replaced, and the switch is often replaced at the same time. The contractor will set the cut-in and cut-out pressures to suit your pump.
Common questions
Do sprinkler wells have pressure tanks?
Some do and some run straight from the pump on a relay. If yours has a tank and the pump cycles, the tank is the first suspect.
How long does a pressure tank last?
Often 10 years or more. Short cycling and rust are signs it's near the end.
Can a bad switch damage the pump?
Yes. A switch that sticks on can leave the pump running dry or nonstop.
